Spare Tire Kills
There have been studies in Europe that have proven that having a belly of fat will cause you to die earlier. Most people already know that and this is not a new subject, but the thing that is new is that even if a person's BMI is good and they have spare tire fat they are just as unhealthy as overweight people. They looked at waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio alone -- not just overall weight -- they found that those factors were strongly associated with a higher mortality risk too. A 2-inch increase in waist circumference raised the mortality risk by 17% in men and 13% in women, regardless of BMI. The link was strongest in those who were at a healthy weight, compared to their heavier peers. Men with the biggest girths (about 40.4 inches) were 2.05 times more likely to die during the study than men with waists that were less than 33.9 inches. Women with waists 35 inches or larger had a mortality risk 1.78 times higher than those with waists less than 27.6 inches. This information is shocking and people who are healthy can still be just as unhealthy as a person who is fat.

Interesting. I never knew that even if people are considered overweight or obese, and still have a belly of fat, it is just as bad. This shows how doing a BMI test isnt always the best way to see how healthy you might be. There are many other things to take into concideration (what you eat, how much you exercise, how you feel, etc) that effect your overall health. Good information!
